The concept of Holistic Nutrition still seems to be an ambiguous one to some people, so I thought a brief explanation of what a Holistic Nutritionist does would be helpful.

Usually what comes to mind for most people is diet plan and weight management, and while a Nutritionist’s first focus is food and weight is a big part of being healthy, a diet plan to reduce weight is not all we offer. Certified Holistic Nutritionists, emphasis on “Holistic”, provide services that considers the whole life of a person, not just what a person eats, and definitely not just how weight is affected by what you eat.

You see, while what you eat is essential for good health it is not the only component of health nor does it work in isolation of other influencers of health. This fact of food as a “component” and not the “be-all” of health is huge and should never be dismissed.

For example, you can be the healthiest eater in the world but if you lead a mostly sedentary lifestyle, you will still develop health issues. Or you could eat healthy but your stress management is terribly ineffective causing not only the perception of stress in your mind but also a significant stress response throughout your body. Chronic stress is one of the leading causes of disease today, and that is a fact, not my opinion… see sources: 1, 2, 3, 4.

You could also eat healthy, maintain a healthy weight, but you’re still struggling with other health problems.

So, a Holistic Nutritionist, considers ALL health influencers of a persons life.

Now you may be wondering what are ALL the health influencers. I mentioned 3 above – food, movement, stress. Others include:

  • sleep
  • conscious thought
  • subconscious thought
  • mindset
  • social connection
  • genetic predisposition
  • epigenetics
  • environment
  • personal hygiene
  • touch
  • sex

And in addition to affecting your weight, these influencers impact other areas such as:

  • endocrine health
  • digestive health
  • cardiovascular health
  • immune system health
  • nervous system health
  • brain health
  • mental health

These lists are by no means exhaustive. In a nutshell, everything about your life affects every area of your health and by extension every aspect of your ability to live the fulfilling happy life you want. And, this is the focus of a Holistic Nutritionist; we take an all encompassing holistic view into your life. We consider your whole life, not just your diet and your weight, to help you live healthy and be happy.

I really hope this clears up any ambiguity.

With love and sincere desire for you to live healthy and be happy,

Suelen (Certified Nutritional Practitioner)
